Session Overview

Information coming soon!

We are watching an entire unique biome and Apex Climate system potentially going extinct on our watch!

This session explores the need for innovative solutions to protect the rapidly diminishing sea ice of the Central Arctic Ocean and what the consequences are both for the Indigenous peoples of the North and globally of losing Earth's refrigerator and climate regulator. The good news is that GlobalChoices will show that there is a bold, whole systems vision to protext this Global Commons with a 10-year Moratorium on Exploitative Activity. The discussion will sow how this aspiration has moved from theory to action and some of those who have drafted the legal and governance processes will share how it is possible to work from a base of climate jjustice and that truly intersectional, intergenerational leadership in marine governance can be a reality.

Beth Doherty

Climate Youth Delegate for Ireland

I am a recent law graduate of the University of Cambridge and a current LLM candidate at LSE, with a focus on climate and international law and policy.

I have been involved in climate advocacy since 2019, working nationally and internationally on climate justice.During my time at university, I coordinated and delivered a report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on the links between the climate crisis and children's rights. I have also worked with Global Choices to co-design international agreements to protect the Arctic. I was a COP28 Delegate, advocating for greater protection for the Arctic and an equitable phase out of fossil fuels. I am currently serving as Ireland's Climate Youth Delegate, where I work to involve and consult Irish youth in the work of Ireland's National Climate Delegation to COP29.

Maria Abbasi

Sustrendz

My career path may not follow the typical standards, but that’s what makes it exciting.

My journey is all about embracing new challenges, taking risks, and continually learning.

I hold a Master’s in Environmental Sciences and am currently leading all environment, sustainability, and training projects at Sustrendz. I’m also a Master Trainer for the British Council’s PYLI Program, empowering young people to take meaningful action in the climate space.

As a full-time volunteer, I co-founded and serve as the Outreach Coordinator for the Pakistan Youth Biodiversity Network (the official youth constituency for the UN CBD). Here, I lead a passionate network of volunteers across Pakistan, focusing on biodiversity education and youth capacity building. My work involves navigating biodiversity policies like the GBF, NBSAPs, and NBTs, both locally and globally. We’re preparing for COP16 and the IYCB, and my goal is to nurture young leaders who can drive community-level initiatives to conserve biodiversity with minimal resources.

I’m deeply committed to quality, work ethics, and clear communication in everything I do. My passion lies in raising awareness about environmental issues, networking, and creating meaningful change. Beyond work, I love traveling, writing, and experiencing the diversity of life.
